Care

General Maintenance: Prune your bonsai to keep a consistent shape and form and to encourage a bushier appearance. Do most of your pruning in the winter while the plant is dormant. Repot to a larger pot once roots become visible around the drainage holes of the pot. Transplant in the early evening to give it a chance to recover from transplanting before receiving sunlight.

Temperature: Does well in temperatures between 20°C – 30°C . These plants like it hot!

Light: Prefers partial sun to full sun.

Watering: Keep your tree evenly moist. Striking a balance between not enough water and too much water can be a bit tricky, but is very important. Water thoroughly and deeply when it needs water and let it dry out slightly before watering again. An old bonsai watering trick is to place the entire pot in a sink of water an inch or two deep and let the water absorb from the holes in the bottom of the pot. Do NOT let this plant dry out completely or it will die.

Soil: Well-draining soil mixture that retains moisture. A peat-based mix with some added perlite would do the trick.

Fertilizer: Fertilizing a bonsai is essential to its health because the nutrients in the soil leave very quickly with the frequent watering. When new growth appears in the spring, it’s time to start feeding your bonsai. Use a balanced fertilizer once every two weeks during the growing season. In late summer when growth starts to slow, reduce the feeding to once a month. During the fall and winter months when your bonsai is in its dormancy phase, use a fertilizer that does not contain nitrogen. This will help the plant’s root system stay healthy and active without encouraging new foliage growth. A vitamin supplement/root stimulant is an excellent complement to fertilizers.
